The Solar HUT is a modular, scalable emergency shelter designed for displaced and off-grid communities. Drawing from traditional African hut architecture, the shelter is constructed using recycled billboard tarpaulin, aluminium poles, and community-built components. Designed for local production at approximately $120 per unit, Solar HUT includes integrated solar lighting—powered by reused e-waste and plastics—to ensure electricity access even in remote areas. Compact and culturally resonant, it deploys quickly and fosters a sense of familiarity and dignity for its users.

Culturally Resonant Design & Community Comfort

Inspired by the form and atmosphere of traditional African huts, the Solar HUT delivers both practical shelter and emotional familiarity. The design encourages comfort and community cohesion, responding to the emotional as well as physical needs of its users.

Circular Materials & Local Production

Constructed from recycled billboard tarpaulin and lightweight aluminium poles, Solar HUT embodies circular design principles by transforming waste into shelter. Designed for local fabrication, each unit costs roughly $120 and can be assembled in as little as four hours by community teams. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also promotes local ownership and adaptability.

Solar-Powered Lighting Integration

Each unit comes equipped with a built-in solar lighting system using recycled e-waste and plastic waste. This ensures reliable access to lighting—essential for safety, evening activities, and community resilience—even in areas without grid power. Combined with its passive ventilation design, Solar HUT enables a functional, self-sufficient living module for displaced settings.
