Glow Lamp

Project Brief

The Glow Lamp is a modular, DIY lighting system crafted to address both energy poverty and the global e-waste crisis. Leveraging 3D‑printed components made from recycled plastic and scavenged electronic parts, it offers a clean, affordable, and repairable alternative to kerosene lamps and disposable batteries. Inspired by the simplicity of Lego-like snap-fit assembly, the Glow Lamp empowers users, from rural households to refugee camps, to build, repair, and upgrade their own lighting solutions with minimal technical training. This open-source model not only reduces environmental harm but also fosters local innovation and skill building

Eco-engineered Components

The Glow Lamp features a design rooted in circular economy principles. Its 3D‑printed parts, crafted entirely from recycled plastic, slip together without glue or adhesives. Internal electronics are fully modular, allowing for individual components—like solar cells or LEDs—to be swapped out or repaired, which extends the product’s usable life and simplifies maintenance. By turning waste into functional parts, the Glow Lamp reduces electronic pollution and reframes discarded materials as valuable design resources.

DIY Assembly

Designed with communities in mind, the Glow Lamp comes as a flat‑pack kit that can be assembled with basic tools and printed locally using community 3D printers. This hands-on approach not only reduces logistics costs but also transforms users into active participants in energy production. Workshops centred on lamp-building serve dual purposes: they provide immediate lighting while teaching valuable manufacturing and troubleshooting skills cultivating a generation equipped to tackle future sustainability challenges.

Built for Impact

Engineered for resilience and affordability, the Glow Lamp is weather-resistant and operates reliably in off-grid environments. Its compact, lightweight form makes it ideal for remote regions and emergency scenarios. By offering a scalable lighting solution that’s easy to produce and distribute, it brings clean energy to underserved populations, helping reduce indoor pollution, extend study hours for students, and improve safety after dark. The Glow Lamp thus represents a bridge between innovation and social impact, offering a blueprint for community-driven renewable energy solutions.
